Few things are more frustrating than cellulite. Persistently present and seemingly resistant, cellulite haunts many-an upper thigh and backside. You are not alone in your battle against cellulite—upwards of 90% of women share in your struggle. In the past, many treatments have failed to effectively treat cellulite—which, along with Dr. Michalak, makes us especially proud to introduce a new method of permanent cellulite removal to our Issaquah practice.
To understand the method behind treating cellulite, it is important to first understand cellulite itself. Cellulite is simply pockets of excess fat squeezed between bands of connective tissues. As fat stresses these bands (known as fibrous septae) the skin is pulled down and creates the dimpling that is seen on the skin’s surface.
Known for its cottage cheese like appearance, cellulite is most commonly present on the thighs and buttocks—seemingly, where we tend to store the most fat. Cellulite appears as individual indents and will not cover an entire area of skin. It is important to note that cellulite is not lumpy body fat. This helps explain as to why even the skinniest amongst us are susceptible to cellulite.
As the statistics show, women are much more likely to develop cellulite than men. Why is this? Men are lucky in that their connective tissues are better structured to hold fat in place. Not only are the bands more numerous in men, their bands are thicker. Men’s connective tissues also form a crisscross pattern in comparison to the vertical pattern in women’s bodies.
How Do We Treat Cellulite?
Our new cellulite removal technique is unique in that it treats the underlying cause of cellulite—the connective bands. Our method is based on the simple idea that by snipping the fibrous septae, the dimpling in which cellulite is caused by can be flattened out.
Utilizing an innovative approach, we are able to target each cellulite dimple individually. Gently suctioning the skin, a miniature blade is able to slide below the skin’s surface and release the connective tissue that is creating the dimple.
